Free Mold Estimates
Can we agree rarely is anything in life actually free? Hidden costs or strings are typically attached to everything in life and mold is certainly one of them.
People suspect mold and will want it evaluated for free, when in realty what they need is a Professional Mold Inspection, which comes at a cost. You see when you pay for advice you are entitled to unbiased advice. Anyone offering a free inspection or cost is indeed selling you and typically selling you fee and an expensive (and not always warranted) mold remediation..
For example they photo below. The owner saw discoloration the building material in an unfinished attic. The space was used to store clothing and possessions. He noted that the discoloration was present on all the building material through the space. They were alarmed and called a mold company to inspect and got a Free Mold Estimate.
The cost was over $4,100 to remediate, the price gave the homeowner cause to think that maybe they need a 2nd opinion. Curren Environmental was contacted and yes for a fee we inspected the space and tested the surfaces as we believed it was not actually mold. The result? No mold found, the color was the color the owner just never really noticed it before. But stay with me, the owner was angry that he was being taken advantage of contacted the mold company to explain that there was in fact no mold. Well the company gave him an eye full, how are they supposed to know if it was mold or not? They were not paid to inspect or test and were simply asked to provide a cost to do mold remediation, which is what they did. "They assumed it was mold because the owner said so. How are they going to make money if they don't give estimates?"
Unbelievable? We see it all the time.
In mold the problem is rampant, since the Federal government does not regulate mold, most all states lack mold regulation. (Fact only 11 states have mold regulations).
Home Inspections are not mold inspections, so while an inspector may say mold was noted in the basement in attic, it does not define the extent or the cause. Both of which you need to properly remediate the mold.
Our standard mold inspection is typically $300 to $400 and for that fee clients will receive three services.
-
We will inspect areas where mold was suspected or noted. If said areas are not impacted with mold, that statement will be provided. On some sites testing maybe necessary to confirm staining or discoloration on a surface is or is not mold. Testing is typically $50.00 and that money spent can far outweigh the cost to remediate.
-
Areas will be evaluated for cause of mold so recommendations can be provided to address deficiencies that caused the mold growth. In short if you don’t fix the problem mold will return. We see this on about 40% of sites we inspect for reoccurring mold problems.
-
Lastly we provide a cost to remediate the mold. 99% of our mold remediation project include application of a fungistatic (mold resistant coating) with an industry leading 10 year warranty.
If the client decides to remediate with Curren, they can get a 50% credit from the inspection cost applied to the remediation. Yes we do a great job remediating mold and have close to 30 years doing it, but it doesn't matter if we do the remediation or not. We were paid to inspect and the client is free to hire whoever they want to remediate. To be clear 70% of mold remediation work averages between $2,000 and $5,000.
Are free Mold inspections scams? (currenenvironmental.com)
The bottom line is many mold companies work in their best interest not that of the owner or client. This is particularly true if you are being offered free advice. Conversely Home Inspections are not mold inspections, so while an inspector may say mold was noted in the basement in attic, it does not define the extent or the cause. Both of which you need to properly remediate the mold.
