Oil Tank Removal Margate, Longport, Ventnor (North end of Ocean City)
aka Oil tank removal on a barrier island
When you think coastal you think beach and bay, sun and sand not oil tanks, but oil tanks were used in coastal areas for sure.
The age of construction on the islands including Atlantic City, Longport, Margate, Ventnor and Ocean City there is a legacy of oil heat. Many homes had oil as a heat source and the oil was stored in Underground Storage Tanks (USTs). Hey even in coastal towns heat for a home was desirable, because people wanted heat. The photo below is an oil tank in Mystic Island, Connecticut. Yes Connecticut is not New Jersey but there was heating oil dealer there from1949. Atlantic City had a fairly larger heating oil depot dealer up until the 1990's as did Cape May County, which had several.
The below photo is an oil tank removed from a house in Margate NJ.
The photo is of the same tank, due to an elevated groundwater table, the tank was sitting in a wet environment and subject to corrosion.
My point is oil heat has been used up and down the East Coast, well before you bought an iPhone. When an oil to gas conversion occurred, the oil tank was often left in the ground, abandoned. (Removal cost money). Many Jersey Shore homes have an abandoned oil tank, the current owner may not even know exists. We find these tank when we complete a tank sweep on the property.
Oil Tank Sweeps
The photo below is from a tank removal in Ventnor. You will notice how thin the tank is. Oil tanks at the shore were typically narrow, so they would not have to be buried too deep and this able to avoid touching the high groundwater table on the island.

You can se from the next photo, that water is stilling at the bottom of the removed tank excavation. You see tanks at the shore have a harsher environment and are more prone to corrosion and leaks due to the high groundwater table.

Curren Environmental has been removing tank for over 30 years.
