Oil tanks have been used to heat homes in New Jersey since at least the 1940's.  Oil heat became popular (replacing coal heat) in the 1940's after World War II (WWII).   Oil was commonly stored in underground oil tanks, less common in Aboveground Storage Tanks (ASTs)  and rarely were these oil tanks ever replaced.

You think Jersey Shore you think beach (hopefully not that tv show), ocean, sun & fun.    Well homes at the shore needed heat and oil was king.  Homes in Ventnor, Margate and Longport had oil heat, there were also auto dealerships on the island that are long since gone.   The legacy of oil heat are buried tanks that owners left in the ground because removal cost money, access was difficult and the conversion to natural gas cost money.

The tank below was found from a tank sweep Curren performed for the buyer.  Home was built in 1961, owner bought home 13 years ago, zero evidence of oil heat as you can see from the photo on the left any aboveground piping has long since been hidden.

The down side oil is that oil tanks are made of metal, the shore is a corrosive environment, the tanks leak and the property owner is tasked with cleaning up the leak.
