Cells phones have advanced a lot, so has energy. We have solar, & heat pumps. But turn the clock back 100 years and oil was king. Oil was not dethroned until the 1980's. So buy an older home (house with character) you buy oil heat liability.
The house below with the old car, was heated by oil.
If you find a leaking tank on a property, you the owner has to pay to clean it up, not the person who last used it. Totally unfair, but that's how it rolls.
85% of buried tanks were installed prior to environmental regulations which came into effect in the 1970's. Tanks installed in the 1970's and 1980's were NOT directly subject to environmental regulations unless a leak was discovered.

So yes the property you are buying that was built before 1980 likely had oil heat and the tank is likely still buried.
